Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi will again offer the Get Ready to Run school program to elementary schools in the central Mississippi area. In its first year, the Get Ready to Run school program was implemented in 26 schools in Hinds, Madison and Rankin counties reaching more than 13,000 students. In January 2014, more than 1,200 of those students participated in the Mississippi Blues Marathon Kids’ One-Mile Fun Run in downtown Jackson. Of those original 26 schools, the three participating schools with the highest percentage of participation on race day earned money for their physical education programs. 2014 winners were:
-1st place - $2,000 | Saint Anthony Catholic School
-2nd place - $1,500 | New Hope Christian School
-3rd place - $1,000 | Luther Branson Elementary
An award of $500 was also presented to Mannsdale Elementary which won the award for creating the best story board depicting their experiences with the Get Ready to Run school program.
Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi is excited to announce that for the fall 2014 semester, we will offer the program to schools in Claiborne, Copiah, Hinds, Issaquena, Madison, Rankin, Sharkey, Simpson, Warren and Yazoo counties!
The Get Ready to Run program introduces students to the benefits of running, physical fitness and healthy lifestyle choices in a fun and rewarding way! Our goals are to assist K-5th graders in building endurance, setting and accomplishing long-term fitness goals and enhancing their self-esteem while teaching valuable lessons about making health and fitness a regular part of their lives.
Eligible students from participating schools will also have the opportunity to run the Mississippi Blues Marathon Kids’ One-Mile Fun run at no cost! Students who run on race day can also help earn award money to support their school’s P.E. program. The Kids’ One-Mile Fun Run will be limited to a maximum of 3,000 participants. The spots will be available on a first-come, first served basis, upon open registration. So students must register between November 1-15 to guarantee their spot!
The Get Ready to Run lessons and activities were developed by health and wellness experts at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi in cooperation with the Mississippi Department of Education and fully support the Mississippi Framework for Physical Education and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education Standards.
If your child attends school in one of the eligible counties, ask your child’s school to email firstname.lastname@example.org to let us know their school would like to participate.
